We are not a problem people; we are a people with problems. We have historic strengths; we have survived because of family.
A constant supporter of her husband's vision before and after his death, King organized a series of concerts called Freedom Concerts to support SCLC. In 1962, she served as a Women's Strike for Peace delegate to the 17 Nations Disarmament Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. She reaffirmed her long-standing opposition to apartheid, by participating in sit-in protests in Washington, D.C. In 1986 she traveled to South Africa and met with Winnie Mandela while Nelson was still a political prisoner. She later urged President Reagan to approve sanctions against South Africa.
